Maxtor Hard Drive PCB swapping replacement guide

Maxtor Corporation, founded in 1982 and acquired by Seagate Technology in 2006, was an American manufacturer of computer hard disk drives, the third largest in the world immediately prior to acquisition.

Swapping the printed circuit board (PCB) on Maxtor hard drives requires matching several things “EXACTLY” for your best chance of success without having to swap any chips from your old PCB to the new PCB.

Minimum match requirements: 

1. Model number: (7H500F0) 

2. Code: (HA431DD0) 

3. Controller chip (040128000) This will be the largest square chip on the PCB

Best result requirement match:

1. Full model number: (7H500F008A5RA) 

2. Code: (HA431DD0) 

3. 4 letters on label: (N,G,B,A)

4. PCB number: (RBGHB) This is located on the PCB near the interface on a white label. Normally the middle number/letter set. 

5. Controller chip: (040128000) This will be the largest square chip on the PCB 

6. Motor combo chip: (SH6790A P) This will be the smaller square chip on the PCB

If these things are not matched “EXACTLY”, you will be able to get the drive to spin, but you will not be able to get the drive to be recognized to recover your data or use the drive. (See photos for examples). 

If this is the case when you install the matching PCB you will need to transfer the 8 pin ROM chip from your original PCB to the matching PCB for the drive to be recognized in the bios to recover your data. These ROM chips are specific for each drive and a simple PCB swap with an exact match is not a guarantee without the ROM transfer.
