Samsung Hard Drive PCB swapping replacement guide

Swapping the printed circuit board (PCB) on Samsung hard drives requires matching 4 things “EXACTLY” for your best chance of success without having to swap any chips from your old PCB to the new PCB. We recommend matching the full model number (HM500JJ) and also the Revision (REV A) and the Firmware (F/W) (2AK10001) all of which can be found on the drive label. Not all Samsung hard drives have the Firmware (F/W) on the drive label as you can see from the next photo of Model number (HM501II). If this is the case with your hard drive, you will not be able to match the (F/W). The last thing that is required for the PCB swap on Samsung drives is matching the PCB number. The PCB number on Samsung drives is located on the PCB itself (S3M_REV.02 R00). Other Example of PCB numbers on Samsung drives are as follows: (BF41-00089A) (BF41-00108A) (BF41-00051A) (BF41-0015A)

If these 4 things are not matched “EXACTLY”, you will be able to get the drive to spin, but you will not be able to get the drive to be recognized to recover your data or use the drive. (See photos for examples).

If this is the case when you install the matching PCB you will need to transfer the 8 pin ROM chip from your original PCB to the matching PCB for the drive to be recognized in the bios to recover your data. These ROM chips are specific for each drive and a simple PCB swap with an exact match is not a guarantee without the ROM transfer.
